Race reports 2021

Final at the LMCC Luxembourg

It was supposed to be three days of racing action. But the weather gods and the racing gods had a bit of a falling out on Sunday, forecasting storms and rain. Hoping the weather would improve, we lit candles in the church until Thursday. On Thursday, we had to make a decision. In my opinion, we made the better decision to shorten the race to two days. For anyone who has a witty remark about this, I'd love to see you in our shoes and have to make that decision. Any comments welcome.

But let's get to the main event: the race, the course, and the people. What can I say? All in all, worthy of a final. A fantastic race, the course with its elevation changes was simply superb, and the people—all of you—were simply the best I know.

You are all the reason why my decision was so difficult. I've been involved in organizing the Race Car Series for three years now. This is my last race report for you. I'm retiring from organizing and active model racing for personal reasons. It makes me a little sad to let go, but also proud of what we've accomplished. Thank you to everyone who has supported me during this time. I'm leaving with many wonderful memories and a personal farewell in Luxembourg that I hadn't expected. Even as I write this, a few tears of gratitude are flowing.

Yours, Thomas

Formula Challenge

And once again we were able to welcome new drivers to this wonderful class. Many thanks also to Luigi for the huge compliment. He told me it was such a great event and he had more fun than he'd had in a long time. He said everyone was fantastic and so on. Believe me, I blushed with joy!

Ten cars lined up at the starting line. Luigi, who actually comes from the nitro scene, secured pole position with his Genius, ahead of Alex and Silvio. The competition in the Formula class is becoming increasingly fierce and demands an extremely high level of skill.

The final, however, saw a complete reshuffling of the deck. From the start, it was exciting right to the end. Position changes were commonplace in the 25-car race. Everyone drove very fairly in the battles. Luigi made a small mistake in the first third of the race and had to fight his way back from the rear. During the first third of the race, the fight for first place was fierce among all 10 drivers. The driving of these guys was absolutely spectacular. Only then was Alex able to pull away slightly, closely followed by Gogol and Jörg. Alex, in true Iceman style, wouldn't let his victory slip away. Shortly before the finish, Luigi managed to overtake Jörg and thus secured third place.

Let's continue with our trucks.

I'd like to say something here. I think this class is absolutely fantastic. The guys are in great form, and it's a joy to watch them drive. Unfortunately, it's always a struggle to fill this class. On Saturday, only Andre Spaan was at the starting line. Being alone on the track isn't much fun. But now back to the racing action on Sunday in the heats. Mr. "Fast Truck" Thomas Dammer once again demonstrated his excellent truck driving skills. He was closely followed by Andre and Daniel.

Preliminary ranking

The Super Sports Car League continues. Here too, the racing was very close. Günter, who has been driving a Mecatech since this year, was incredibly fast right from the start. Dennis also managed to give our "Iceman" Oppi a run for his money in Velp.

Before the lunch break, the SUB finals took place. The tension was high as everyone waited to see who would advance to the semi-finals. The top three from each final then made it to the semi-finals.

Here are the results of the quarter-finals:

The semifinals determined who would advance to the coveted A-final and who would compete in the B-final. The competition remained exciting until the very end, with the positions for fourth through sixth constantly changing hands. Oppi managed to find another tenth or two of a second or two, demonstrating once again his claim to a podium finish. It's great to see our newcomer, Bas Aalders, make it to the A-final.

Although the C final only had 6 drivers, it was no less exciting than the other finals. Holger secured the victory in this final thanks to an almost flawless performance.

The B final also featured a top-class field. Unfortunately, Tobias Bosse once again suffered technical difficulties and had to retire after lap 6. Curt and Stephan battled it out for the win, with Curt ultimately taking first place.

A Final

From the start, four drivers pulled away bumper to bumper like a high-speed train. In lap 7, Oppi had to retire from the race early due to a carburetor failure. What a shame, the excitement was gone. However, the remaining three at the front managed to maintain the tension. After 30 minutes, the top three were still on the same lap. The gap between Michael and Dennis was a mere 8 seconds, and between him and Günter, only about four-tenths of a second. Incredible...

Weekend summary:

Mixed weather, fantastic atmosphere, sensational club... races that couldn't be more exciting. What more could you want?

Race 4 at EVMC Velp

We were really happy that the COVID-19 regulations for the Netherlands were finally approved. This meant that nothing stood in the way of our fourth race of the Race Car Series at our friends' club, EVMC Velp. The weather did play a few tricks on us, but Friday was almost entirely dry, as was Sunday. So, apart from one heat, we were able to run all the races in dry conditions.

57 participants registered, of whom 53 ultimately started the race. And let me tell you, I've been involved in organizing the Race Car Series for three years now. The weekend in Velp has been like a really good thriller so far. Excitement in all classes right to the very end. And all at a very fair level. Absolutely top-class!

Preliminary ranking

final

Well, there he was again. Thomas impressively demonstrated just how fast you can drive a truck. A start-to-finish victory for him. The resurgent Markus Schneider deservedly took second place ahead of Olli in third. It's a shame Andre had an unfortunate collision right at the beginning that forced him to retire. Otherwise, it might have been a bit more exciting.

Let's move on to the all-wheel drive guys.

Unfortunately, only 9 cars in this interesting entry-level class were on the starting grid. But that didn't make it any less exciting. This time we also had a woman competing. Hopefully, Vanessa will be able to participate more often next year. After the heats, the experienced Marc secured pole position ahead of Marcel and Mirco. But this wasn't as easy as the standings suggested and promised plenty of action for the final.

Yes, as I said, it wasn't easy. Marc was in a commanding lead right from the start. Gogol was caught up in several battles and lost contact after going off the track. But then came Gogol's moment of glory. In a sensational comeback, he managed to get back behind Marc just before the finish and then overtake him at the very end. Hats off to him!

Great races from everyone! Super clean and fair driving, it was a real pleasure to watch you all.

Race 2 at the MCC Rhein Ahr

or instead of Days of Thunder, Days of Rain

That's roughly how you could describe the weekend at the MCC Rhein Ahr. But anyone who thinks everyone was downcast and no cars were on the track because of the weather doesn't know the guys from the Race Car Series. In true German Championship style, everyone who had entered was out on the track, putting on some fantastic battles in the rain. A truly goosebump-inducing experience.

And the MCC Rhein Ahr did everything to ensure that the 39 registered drivers had a great time. Thank you for that! 39 participants – you could say a record low! But honestly, 39 drivers with that weather forecast, and as already mentioned, everyone actually raced, is an absolute record for a normal racing event!

Thank you to all participants!

Formula cars look truly fascinating in the rain. We ran a different race than the one at Spa. It's going well...

After the three preliminary heats, the results were as follows. Silvio showed that he's already won a German championship title in the rain. He and Robert are simply gods in the rain.

Due to the persistent rain, a soft touch on the throttle and a steady hand on the wheel were crucial for the final. Robert demonstrated his skill with his experience and perfectly prepared rain-ready car, managing to outpace Silvio by a full four laps to reach the 30-minute mark. Impressive! Andreas, in third place, had the luck of the prepared. He drove consistently and steadily. Jörg was unlucky and couldn't start due to a broken steering servo. All the drivers delivered an exciting and highly entertaining race in the rain.

I think our 4WD guys in the XR5 Rallycross class had the most fun. The drifts around the corners were fantastic to watch. Everyone was really on point, and the heats and finals were driven according to the motto "If you go sideways, you see more." After the heats, the standings were as follows: Marcel showed that he is one of the most experienced drivers of the XR5 and took pole position for the semi-finals. He was followed by Mirko, who was competing for the first time.

In the semi-finals, Marcel and Mirko were able to underline this once again. Unfortunately, Gogol also had technical problems and was relegated to the bottom of the standings. The semi-final results were as follows:

In the final, the cards were reshuffled. Marcel encountered technical problems in lap 10 and had to retire from the race. Gogol also suffered another technical issue. Tobias Keller, also competing in his first race with a rental car, seemed to have gradually adapted to the XR5's handling characteristics and managed to climb to second place. Thomas Decker finished third, completing the podium. The final standings were as follows:

Rain gods? Yes, they existed in the GT Series too.Two more German champions in the rain, showing how it's done. Although, if you look closely, you'll see that only five-tenths of a second separate second and fourth place. Mind you, in the rain! Behind them, the competition was also very close. The preliminary heat rankings were as follows:

Let's move on to the quarterfinals and a name that no one had considered up to that point. Our Guy impressively demonstrated that he had found both the right setup and the right tires just in time for the finals. First place ahead of Olli and HP. The great thing was that everyone was able to advance to the semifinals.

In the semi-finals, our Guy reappeared at the top. A sensational performance for the second time from him, and it wouldn't be the last. Markus Streicher showed that he, too, is a force to be reckoned with in the rain. And Tobi Bosse also drove very confidently to second place. It was great to see the roulette wheel spinning. This promised that the main finals could be very exciting.

Despite the relatively large differences in the total lap times, it remained exciting. You could tell that driving a rain final requires an incredible amount of concentration. Unfortunately, five drivers were unable to start due to technical issues. Rain isn't good for our cars... Holger won the B-final, ahead of Dirk and Steve. HP finished just behind, narrowly missing the podium.

A-Final:

And what can I say, Guy Stephany took third place. I can only say chapeau! His final had one small blemish: he overtook Günter in the early stages. Günter had to let the whole field pull away. But here he showed once again that with all his experience and his calm, fast driving style, anything is possible. Second place was more than deserved in the end. Behind the two leaders, there was a trio whose excitement was unbeatable. Tobi, Marcus, and Markus battled for the entire 30 minutes for the last spot on the podium. It was absolutely fantastic. A big "chapeau" to all three of you as well. Pure entertainment value. Feel free to watch it again on pullstart.tv.

Here is the overall ranking:

Conclusion of this weekend:

You are the BEST 1:5 scale racing family there is. I've never seen so many drivers racing in the rain in any other series. That's the highest praise you can give the series, and we can only return the compliment!

You guys are great!

We are looking forward to the next race in Velp at EVMC eV

Race 3 at MCK Dormagen

A big compliment to this racing series is that, despite the holiday season, 54 drivers registered. Of these, 52 then went in pursuit of the best times and the most laps. The weather gods were very kind to us that weekend. Not too hot and a bit of sunshine. Perfect RC weather! However, one realization quickly became apparent: too little grip is just as bad as too much. The more people drove on "Little Monaco," the slower the lap times actually became. The grip level was so high that you had to adjust the car to prevent it from tipping over. This impacted performance. Another lesson learned: with very high grip, "stay away from the curbs and barriers." Unfortunately, a few drivers had to learn this the hard way. Otherwise, the atmosphere was great, and there was consistently fair play on the track.

The Formula Challenge is enjoying very strong growth. This also means that the starting field and lap times are becoming increasingly competitive. Zero mistakes are the motto here as well, to secure a front-row starting position. After the preliminary heats, Silvio managed this best, followed by Jörg and Holger Plähn. Gogol was also close behind.

In theory, we would have had two more exciting semi-finals. Unfortunately, Holger Stannek had to retire his Formula car after the heats with an irreparable technical defect, ending his weekend prematurely. A real shame. So, the final was set. A 30-minute time limit was announced, which always means a refueling stop for a Formula car. Therefore, not only did the performance on the track have to be right, but also the pit strategy. The cool northerner from the south executed it best. Alex won the race more than convincingly ahead of Gogol and Jörg. Congratulations!

Let's move on to our heavy haulage class. We're really pleased that we had five trucks registered again. Unfortunately, due to entry restrictions, one Dutchman had to withdraw, so only four tractor units started. But both the spectators and the drivers had a great time. Here are the results of the Truck Grand Prix class.

Preliminary ranking

Finale

Now let's turn to our GT3 cars. The European starting grid is constantly growing. This weekend, we were pleased to welcome many new drivers from Belgium. A warm welcome to Europe's finest 1:5 scale racing series! Due to the school holidays in many German states and the desire to finally take a vacation after such a long COVID-19 pandemic, we only had 30 drivers competing in the GT series. A bit cheeky, I might add, but I think it's fitting. Despite this, the European field was highly motivated to find the fastest in the PRO and AM classes this weekend. After the three heats, held in consistently perfect weather, the standings were as follows:

Günter Honert was the pole-sitter of the day. Michael Donovan was just under 2.5 tenths of a second behind, with a track time of 7 minutes. Donovan, in turn, had less than 1.5 tenths of a second's lead over Marcus Oppenhorst, the 2020 champion. It was unbelievable how close everything was.

Before the lunch break, the SUB finals took place. The tension was high as everyone waited to see who would advance to the semifinals. Here are the results of the quarterfinals:

The quarterfinals weren't quite full. As I said at the very beginning, in Dormagen, "Little Monaco," keep your hands off the curbs and barriers. The riders who are missing here unfortunately had some pretty rough contact with them.

The semifinals determined who would advance to the coveted A-final and who would land in the B-final. The competition remained exciting until the very end, with the positions for fourth through sixth constantly changing hands. At the end of the 15-minute round, the standings were as follows:

The long-distance duel between Günter Honert and Michael Donovan was once again impressive. Oppi struggled with technical problems but still managed to secure his place in the A-final.

In the C-final, Marcus Radeke secured the victory ahead of Ralf Voiges and Tobias Bosse, who again had to contend with technical issues with his FG on his home track this weekend. Encouragingly, Ralf and Marcus contested their first GT Series race, and I think they enjoyed themselves.

The B-final was also incredibly exciting. Sven Rodewald, competing in his first 2WD 1:5 race (and with a new car, the MCD Duox), showed what he and his car were capable of, winning narrowly ahead of Oliver Osygus and Reiner Bosse. I believe this was the first race where father Reiner finished higher than his son. Congratulations!

And so the A-Final got underway. From the starting line, three drivers pulled away from the pack. This trio was so tightly packed that you couldn't have squeezed a €10 note between them. Unfortunately, after 25 laps, Marcus Oppenhorst had to retire, as a broken insulator screw had already brought his race to an end. Michael consistently led the way, still closely followed by Günter. Günter then made an unplanned pit stop shortly before the finish when a rear wheel came off his car. This allowed Curt to secure second place. The results of the A-Final were as follows:

Weekend summary:

Great weather, great atmosphere, fantastic evening events, mostly fair racing, and pure excitement. That's what the GT Series is all about. Simply fantastic...

We are looking forward to the next race in Bad Breisig at the MCC Rhein Ahr eV.

Race report, race 1, 2021 at MAC Saar in Niederwürzbach

You shouldn't complain about the weather. Brilliant sunshine this weekend at MAC Saar. Admittedly, someone could have turned the heating down a bit, as 34 degrees Celsius was pushing the limits for both the drivers and the race cars. But it was much better than rain. The atmosphere reflected that. Everyone was in good spirits and happy to finally be racing again. Erich Hauck and his team had prepared the track perfectly. Plus, there was the first live broadcast on pullstart.tv. All in all, "perfect conditions."
The track initially appears very simple. However, this impression is deceptive. Due to the many high-speed sections, you had to hit the slower sections and the corners onto the straights very precisely. If you didn't, you could easily lose two to three tenths of a second. Despite all this, everyone had a great time on the track and we had a fantastic weekend... Thanks to the entire MAC Saar team!

I think that due to the short notice and the late approval for us to race, only 41 drivers were on the starting grid. What does "only" mean? For us, it was quite a lot. Seven drivers competed in the Formula Challenge and 34 in the Super Sports Car League. There were some fierce battles, and not just because of the weather.
In the Formula Challenge, we welcomed two new drivers. We're delighted to have you with us. Alexander Napravnik, a true veteran of the 1:5 scale racing scene, who hadn't held a spark plug in years, took to the track in a Formula car. In all three heats, he demonstrated that he hadn't lost his touch, either in terms of mechanics or driving skills. He confidently secured pole position after the three heats, ahead of Robert Franicevic and Jörg Fehling. Andreas Ivo, the second newcomer to the Race Car Series, secured sixth place on the starting grid for the 45-minute final.
Since we didn't have semi-finals and wanted to give the Formula drivers some track time and fun, we extended the final to 45 minutes. This meant everyone had to stop for refueling. Unfortunately, Antonino Frenna and Silvio Böhmichen retired. Robert had a crash at the beginning of the race in the banked corner, which cost him his rear wing. It was reattached during the pit stop. Unfortunately, this meant he no longer had a chance at the podium. Bernd ran out of fuel shortly before the end. The drivers in first and second place were the least conspicuous and drove their laps almost flawlessly. Despite his early retirement, Bernd still managed to secure third place, followed by Andreas and Robert. A very fair final...
And now to the Super Sports Car League. It's great to see the family growing ever larger. This pleases us and shows us that this is the right path. Originally, 34 GT cars were supposed to take to the starting grid. The one electric car, driven by Christoph Flakowski (yes, he was back!), unfortunately had to throw in the towel on Friday due to a failed speed controller. A real shame; I would have loved to see Chris in the field. So, 33 was the magic number of starters, and on the fast track, a very close field of drivers was evident from the outset. The heats were very fair and exciting right from the start. In the end, "Professor Ice" Marcus Oppenhorst once again came out on top. He's not only the coolest driver but also a gifted mechanic. Hence the nickname :-) It's great to see several new drivers among the top 10. Marco and Jan found their footing right from the beginning. But the other newcomers to the series also performed well and mingled with the seasoned veterans. Here are the results after the three preliminary heats.
The SUB-Finals started even before the lunch break. Due to a few technical issues, the quarterfinals went straight to 15 minutes. Here, some drivers benefited from having used their maximum of three pairs of tires effectively. It was very exciting to see who would advance to the semifinals. Here are the quarterfinal results:

The semifinals followed. The top five finishers from each final advanced to the main A final, while those finishing 6th through 10th automatically qualified for the B final. Both semifinals were extremely close, and with such a high-caliber field of competitors, even the slightest deviation from the rules could result in a driver, despite maintaining the same pace, finding themselves relegated to the B final after just 20 minutes. Here are the semifinal results:

The C final was fantastic. Tobias Keller secured a very convincing victory ahead of Stefan Müller and Mark Coenen. However, it must be said that many drivers didn't make it to the end of the 30-minute race due to fuel shortages.

The B-final was very similar. At least three drivers had enough fuel for the 30-minute race. A great achievement for the two newcomers to the GT class, Guy Stephany and Sascha Siegert. They won the B-final in their very first race, and this wouldn't be the end of their success.

Let's move on to the A-Final. I think it was the strongest and fastest in the history of the Race Car Series. Absolutely insane and exciting right down to the last minute. Even our "Iceman" Oppi had a tough time and couldn't afford to make a single mistake. But he managed it again... Well done, Oppi! Behind him, things were really heating up, and it remained exciting until the very end. After 30 minutes, the results of the A-Final were as follows:

All the finals were exciting until almost the very end. They were also generally extremely fair, thanks in part to a competent race director. Hans-Jörg Stier intervened where necessary and handed out penalties. This was a good thing, as it meant we had pure racing action.

Here is the overall ranking:

Conclusion from run 1:
Although only two classes at the start of the season, BUT still...
A fantastic start to the 2021 season with a great racetrack, a great club, lots of new "nice" faces, great weather, and a sensational amount of fun in the Race Car Series family. We're looking forward to the next race in Bad Breisig at the MCC Rhein Ahr eV.
